Black & Veatch

A whole new strategy studio

The leaders of Black & Veatch had the ambition to grow bolder services but lacked the internal mindset and skillset to grow them without consultants. We designed and built a strategy studio and gave their people the agency to build their own business cases.

The problem

Black & Veatch asked us to simplify the growth strategy framework a major consulting agency left behind to help scale bolder services internally. Teams were attempting to diagnose H2/H3 level evolution of their current service lines. Included in the problem was the development of a studio for intrapreneurial business leaders, an online and in-person curriculum and organizational facilitation tools to democratize the skillset and mindset to grow without consultants.

How we helped

We adapted the where to play and how to win strategy framework with design thinking curriculum to create a strategy studio that guided leaders through a step-by-step process for developing new business cases. We offered guided pathways and support, including centralized facilitation and the internal crowd-sourcing of expertise across the organization to accelerate H2/H3 level innovation within the core business.

What we built

As a result of the work, we supported numerous business cases across the organization ranging from Environmental Services to Data Center Development. The business cases strengthened the position of engineering services worldwide to compete more globally with pier engineering firms. Our work also developed new skills and job roles important for the strategic facilitation of new growth through a sustainable internally operated framework.
